Up here the water table is high, so it's a common thing to dig a well to provide water for the sprinkler system. And it's free water! It takes some work to get the well up and running. We have a couple of neighbors who were wanting wells too, so we worked as a team to dig the wells. The boys did the digging. They had to did about 25 feet down. The soil here is clay! It's pretty sticky stuff. As we dug down we hit water at ten feet, but you have to keep digging. We eventually hit sand (which is the idea) Then we had to rent a trash pump to pump out the sandy water. You don't want so much sand in the sprinkler system.
Come to find out you don't want to wait too long to pump out the sand or the well begins to fill up with clay again. Our neighbors pumped their well then it was our turn. We had the hole dug for a few weeks, so the unwanted happened. We weren't sure what was happening. It would pump for a bit then stop. Mac worked for about 5 hours one Saturday and it wasn't pumping so we gave up.
Monday it was just the girls trying to pump to see if it would work at another house. That was a joke. We had to prime the pump by using the hose water and squirting it into a small hole on the top of the pump. And every once in awhile the pump would kick in an a huge geyser shot out that hole. There was no telling when it would happen, but when it did it was like
We had to re-dig the last five feet and try the pump again. We don't lack water he

Oh Tiff, I totally understand your sprinkling system troubles. Last weekend we installed a whole sprinkling system and sod in 4 days. Check the blog to see the makeover. It was sooooo much work so I wish you luck, much luck. I say just leave it mud for the kids, that's a lot easier...if only that looked good! and it's about time you came back to the blogosphere
i thought you got a mad sunburn...i was relieved (for your sake) to find out it was just sand!!
